Pattern: McCall's Misses' Lined and Unlined Jackets and Flower #M4975
Raincoats are usually uninspiring. A quick google shopping search reveals a spate of drab, oversized and decidedly plain selections. That's why when I saw Amy Butler's new all-weather piece I was actually inspired to make myself some weather-appropriate gear. More progress in breaking my sundress-making habit.
And while Amy Butler patterns always jump out at me from the rack, I am usually more inspired by her fabric than her clothing. True, she makes a good pillow or bag, but cotton shirts, I've discovered, are not very figure flattering. Her raincoats, however, look perfect except for one thing: the price. There is no way I'm paying $18.50 for a pattern.
So, I'm keeping the beautiful laminate fabric, using some of Amy's tips, and buying myself a $5 McCall's pattern for a hooded, lined jacket with belt. Unfortunately, because Amy doesn't publish line drawings, it's hard to compare the jackets from a sewing perspective, but nonetheless I am excited to try it out. I will be lining mine with fleece or flannel in a coordinating print, to keep me nice and toasty. I was never too warm in a rain shower.

It may take a little imagination, but I'll get there. |
