Hats for Every Season!

I love hats, and this is a collection of hats to wear all year around. Most of my hats have the same basic design: a fold-over ribbed brim, the dome, and a pom pom on top.

<--The winter hat has an extra-long, thick brim that was inspired by a piece Gwyneth Paltrow wore in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow: it goes almost halfway up the dome! I used a pom-pom maker for the top, but you can also make one yourself out of cardboard (or using your fingers, as I just discovered!).

Yarn: Chunky Lion Brand Jiffy in Wine

--> The dome of the spring hat is made more delicate and light-weight with a butterfly lace, perfect for spring. The brim is ribbed and there is a smaller pom-pom on top.

Yarn: I used a lighter weight, slightly more expensive purple yarn for this project.

<--The summer cap is a bit different from my other hats, but definitely a much better fit for summer. It's knit using the "Headline News Cap" pattern from Stitch 'n Bitch Nation. I added buttons from my khaki pants on either side of the brim and one on top.

Yarn: Rowan Cotton Glace in Twilight

--> The fall hat is a bit different because it does not have a folded brim. The bottom has a few rows of ribbing to keep it from rolling. For the dome, the knitted columns of ribbing are turned into cables.

Yarn: This hat is made in an acrylic yarn in bright pink, but I would recommend experimenting with other yarns and colors.

P.S. One of my hats makes it on CNN!
A Red Star beanie I knit for a friend does double-duty keeping him warm in the rain and supporting the Cal Democrats as the primaries draw near. CNN's Richard Quest captures the moment as he feels out student sentiments for the upcoming elections.
