Mittens for My Brother

Pattern: Knitty's Manly Mitts (free pattern)

Material: Kramer Yarn's Perfection Worsted, one ball each of granite and admiral

Cost: $12

Being the hippy that he is, my brother requested some mittens that would allow him to play his guitar outside in the cold. His birthday came around at the end of September, just as the temperature was starting to drop, so I knit him up some fingerless mitts.

Being the type A that I am, I was a little concerned that I had not made the mittens identical, and had even done a little bit of frogging here and there to rework the sizing. Of course, this also meant enlisting the help of an unsuspecting fella here and there to make sure they would fit a guys' hands. In the end, my brother shoved them on his hands as soon as he got them and would not have been able to tell the difference anyway.

I chose this pattern because I like the print--manly enough but still keeping it interesting for the knitter. The alternate pattern on the thumb is brilliant, too.

I modified the mittens pattern for a worsted weight yarn as follows:

CO 44 in MC
work 15 rows in k1 p1 rib (no increases)
work 3 rows from chart a
follow increase pattern for thumb until 12 new stitches have been made
set aside those 12 stitches and CO 4 sts to cover thumb (48 sts)
work until desired height
with CC, work 6, knit2tog in 1x1 rib
next row: BO.

For the thumb, pick up 18 sts from the stitches set aside and the main part of the glove
work 6 rows in alternating MC/CC sts.
BO in CC.
