Jeans!

Pattern: pants based on Colette's Clover Pants
Fabric: stretch denim
Cost: $20

Hope you're not sick of me making pants yet, because I'm no where near done making them! The latest version is a pair of jeans, a wardrobe staple I've been needing for a while. They were an article of clothing I missed most during Me Made May, and I've been longing for a pair that fits me just right.

As opposed to my four hour pair, these took a bit longer, mostly because I couldn't get the waistband right. I think this mostly has to do with the variability of fabrics - different weaves cause my pants to fit differently, and in this case I think they had a 2-3% stretch instead of 5-10%.

The other thing that I have found annoying about making jeans are the buttons. I have been using Dritz Dungaree buttons, which don't require any special tools and can just be poppezd in to place. But each time I had to redo the waistband, I couldn't get the button off, and I went through about 2 or 3 buttons that way. Even on my current pair I think I need to move the button just slightly, and I'm not sure what I will do!

For some tips on pocket placement, you must read this article. Helpful tips and this lady is hilarious! I don't quite agree with all her advice on "jean shading" and pocket stitching, which isn't much my style, but overall it's great read!

Despite my struggles I'm excited about this pair. I left them slightly loose at K's suggestion, and I think they will make really nice work pants. More fabric is in the mail...

  1. great jeans! as soon as i wrap up the projects i have going i am most definitely tackling jeans this fall since i've been on a bit of "lower half basics" kick myself. and the article regarding pocket placement is genius!

  2. I have the Clover pattern and the pants from the Sew U book all ready for tackling fall pants. The Sew U ones will be jeans-like and bootcut but I won't be doing the decorative stitching. I hope I can get a good fit with those because I haven't had luck with a Colette pattern yet!

  3. ooh I can't wait to see! For the record, the Clovers fit me preeetty well, but they have gone through several changes over 3 or 4 pairs of pants before I got them the way I liked, and even now pants continue to be a challenge...

  4. I went over to read the article you linked to about Mom jeans. That's pretty awesome. This weekend I was at a folk festival and there are a pretty wide range of ages that go, I saw quite a few women rocking the high waist pants/shorts, some more successfully than others. One pair of pants, I could not stop looking at her bum to try and figure out what kind of optical illusion was going on with the pocket placement along with the high waist. I think it was the long butt issue where the pockest were well above the curve of her bottom and with the high waist it looked like her bum was a good foot long. So strange.

Your pants look pretty awesome. I like the top you've paired them with.
