Men's Pants + Giveaway!

Pattern: Thread Theory's Jedediah Pants
Fabric: denim
Cost: $10

Remember my excitement when I made my first pair of pants? Well, I MADE MEN'S PANTS! The quest for the perfect men's pattern started months ago, but at the time there were no commercial patterns that we loved (or that came in his size), and independent men's patterns couldn't be found. But it was this search in part that led me to reconnect with Thread Theory, and to my delight they had men's pants on their list. I had previously tested out their Newcastle Cardigan, which has been getting tons of use, and I knew that these pants would be a hit as well. When they were looking for testers this time around, I jumped at the chance!

If you are intimidated to sew pants - men's or women's - make this your first pattern. If you are an advanced sewist, buy this now, too. The attention to detail, beautiful instructions, and great end product make these pants a joy to sew up. I've slowly been learning the benefit of going with independent pattern companies, and Thread Theory is one of the best. From including details like the finished garment measurements to instructions on how to french seam the pockets, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this pattern!

As is the case with women, the main reason to sew my man up some pants (besides cost) is to get him the perfect fit. Even though men are more straight up and down and often wear looser styles than women, there are some key things that make pants work or not. For him, he often needs a narrower waistband so that his pants stay up. When they are too loose, the butt bags out too much and he has to wear a belt.

After sewing these up, I determined that the fit was pretty great, but could use a few alterations to get to be his favorite pair. For the next version, I plan on making the waistband sit a bit lower, and bringing it in until it's the close fit he wants. I already took the curve out of the side seams at the top, so we're getting close! The fabric is on its way in the mail, and I can't wait to sew up the next version! Plus at $10-$30 bucks a pop, these babies are way cheaper than a quality store-bought pair.

What's really cool about this pattern was to see how it was made up by the different pattern testers. Same pattern, but three different men with three different styles. You can really see the potential of this basic design:

Notes from a Mad Housewife, The Creative Counselor, and K

Plus, you can personalize your pants with all sorts of fun details, from the pocket stitching to the front pocket lining. You don't always see playful menswear, but this is the part I think is the most fun. For his version, I got to use a scrap of woven musical instrument fabric, which was a great personal touch. I sewed it so that you can see the musical instruments when the pants are off, which give them some hanger appeal.

The final reason to sew your man up some pants? He'll need to try them on a few times, which means getting to see him in his skivvies more often ;)

He doesn't particularly enjoy being a model, but is generally a good sport...

Now, for the giveaway!

If I haven't already convinced you that you need to sew these up right now, here's one final reason: you can win your own pattern for free right here! All you have to do is comment on this post by the end of the California day on Friday, and you'll be entered to win. Of course, I'd love to hear the details of what you'd make up: shorts or pants, material, fun pocket ideas, or who you're making them for! Go get 'em, tiger!

Thanks for entering everyone! The giveaway is now closed, and the winner will be announced soon!

  1. How exciting, these look great! I've been looking for a pants pattern for my husband recently as well. He's a cook who needs some nicer pants that are more stylish than the single pair of stodgy suit pants he currently owns to wear to fancy dinners. He loves fun, preferably food-themed fabrics hidden in his clothes, so I'm sure I would raid the scrap bin for something suitable. Thanks for the giveaway!

  2. I've been drooling over the Jedediah pants since their announcement. You did a great job on your pair! I'd love to make my boyfriend a pair. He's on the skinny side of the spectrum and hardly find any pants that fit his waist and his legs. He also likes crazy patterns, so I'm sure I'll add some wild colours and patterns in the details.
    Thank you for the giveaway!

  3. Thanks for the chance! I'm planning on joining the sewalong but haven't got around to getting the pattern yet. I'm going to make my husband the shorts version in a gray/purple double-cloth madras. I'm probably going to underline the madras since it could do with a bit more weight.

  5. I would LOVE to make this pattern up for my husband-- poor picky man hasn't been able to find a single ready-to-wear pair lately. I know he would be violently excited to have some sewn up for him using this pattern!

  6. I would love to mAke these. My husband is tall and lanky and it is a nightmare to find him pants on the highstreet and it is really expensive. He is a bit conservative for colours, but I would make a funky lining and pockets...

  7. I am so excited about their patterns! I really want to try making these for my hubby. I've only made him a button up shirt and would love to try these. Thanks for the good review and images of your version!!

  8. Bah! These look awesome! I especially like the inside fabric you used - MUSIC! Anywho, I would love to make these up for my man - you know... all those fittings ;)

  9. Great pants! I'd love to try them out- I've never successfully made a pair of pants, and it isso much less stressful to make my first pair without having to worry about fitting my body! And it's more fun to see my man in his skivvies than me!

  10. I love the look of this pattern! Classic with the denim, it looks great on your man. I definitely want to make some pants for my husband who is about to become a father for the fourth time. He deserves some good pants (and shorts) that fit his long legs. :D

  11. I've been wanting this pattern. I made my husband a newcastle cardigan and he loved it so I was thinking the pants would probably be a hit too. Yours turned out great!

  12. I would LOVE a chance to win this pattern! I have skinny men in my life and this looks like the perfect pattern for them! Knowing the directions are well thought out too make me want it!

  13. Oh man, this would be great. I'd probably make a pair for myself!

  14. Ahh this pattern is most definitely on my to-buy and to-make list! I'm wanting to join the sewalong, although knowing me I'll get way too ahead of myself and sew them up in a couple of days.

I think my husband wants a pair of plain black trousers so I'll try and find a nice cotton twill (The Fabric Store/NZ has 50% off all fabric for 5 days! Swoon) for him, with some more interesting cotton and bias tape for the insides.

  15. I definitely need to make my partner these trousers! He's a skinny bloke and can never find trousers that fit from the stores (where all the sizes run to super large rather than small), and I'm keeping an eye on Thread Theory for whatever patterns they design for men! The Newcastle cardie is not his style, but these trousers definitely are. If I get these right (when I get around to them ... and I'll buy the pattern irrespective of whether I win your giveaway!), he'll get them in all kinds of fabrics but definitely lots of cotton twill, some stretch denim, some loungey linen and all with awesome silly details on the inside. Things to make him smile and remind him that silly me made them for him!

Yours on K look great, and I love that last photo. Very cute.

  16. Ooohhh! Those look great! My man has skinny hips too so off the hanger trousers always slide down his butt and it makes it look like he's making a fashion statement! Haha. I'd make pants and shorts from this! Thanks so much for the chance xx

  18. They look great! Am going to make these for my skinny husband, hopefully first in a lightweight cargo pants kind of material as we head toward summer. Fingers crossed!

  19. I only discovered Thread Theory last week - totally love all the pattern (oh, the pea coat!) - I love your version of the pants. Now, to work up enough courage to sew for my husband....

  20. I can't wait to make these! The world needs more good menswear patterns.

  21. Ohmygoodness these would be perfect for my boyfriend. I constantly have to alter his pants to fit him (he is a skinny minny) and this pattern would (hopefully) stop that. Leaving more me sewing time ;)

  22. I just discovered this pattern and am so anxious to try my hand at them. It is true there is a huge hole in the market for men's patterns. This trailblazer is so exciting!

  23. I would love to try making these for my hubby. He isn't skinny, and finding nice pants for him is difficult....

  24. I'm just itching to make these pants for my thin, 6'4" husband! Love your version!

  25. From The Garment Farmer: I was considering doing the sewalong for these pants, but they aren't large enough for my hubby. I'd love to try grading them up a couple sizes though--they make a good looking pair of pants!! Lovely work Meg.

  26. I just love this pattern, and your version is amazing. I would make them up in denim or cotton twill for casual and maybe some lightweight wool for smarter occasions. I've been promising to make The Husband trousers for about 5 years now...I think it's time now ;-)

  27. I'd love to make these for my boyfriend. I'd probably start with a pair of shorts first (quick, before the nice weather comes to an end!) and then be brave and make the long version.

  28. I'm already planning on making these for the sew along so I'd love to win the free pattern. I have an olive linen stashed away that would be perfect.

  29. Hmm, I really like the totally different pants on those three dudes. That is and incredibly versatile pattern. I've been stoked to see the Indies tackle menswear! Oh, and pick me!

  30. They turned out sooooo well!
I´m sewing the newcastle cardigan and I love it! Thanks for the giveaway!

  31. First, thank you for the giveaway! Now, talking about men´s patterns, the offer is ridiculous. In the big 4 there are very few patterns if you compare with women´s patterns and with Burda magazine they are rare birds. I just finished another pair of shorts for my husband, but I´m not really happy with the pattern, althought he is delighted with them. Good fit but very little details. I would love to try these!

  32. Oooh, want! My husband has always had lots of fitting issues with pants and I've been meaning to try making some and see if I can do better fit-wise for a long time.

  33. I'd love to make these for my husband. They look like a great pattern.

  34. I have been eyeballing this pattern for a few weeks now, and am thrilled to sew my man some pants as well. the pants you made look really good. Though it's hard to see any detail on the pics, they sure do look great! I love to get a chance to win this pattern!

  38. I bookmarked this pattern forever ago, so glad I just found it while sorting them out!! My husband started work at a new job and he needs new clothes really badly...he has a hard time finding pants in stores that fit him perfectly too (just like me! Weird!). Your version looks really great in denim! He seems to enjoy them, haha :) I'd love to join in sewing the shorts version next week, but besides that, I'll be making office-appropriate pants in whatever fabric my husband picks out, so that could be interesting! Thanks for the giveaway ♥

  39. I would make them for my husband in some gray twill from my stash. He's so skinny so it's hard to find pants that fit right. Thanks for the giveaway! Also, the pants look great.

  40. My bf is constantly bugging me to make him something. This pattern might just be the thing to change my mine! He does need a pair of nice dark jeans....

  41. I just finished a shirt for my boyfriend. These shorts would be a perfect addition to it :-)
I would love to make them in a solid navy blue or forest green but add a lot of beautiful details like bias seam binding in a light brown contrast fabric, a patterned pocket fabric, beautiful buttons, ... I love adding beautiful details to a garment.
I also recently saw some in-seam-pockets that closed with a button and a piece of ribbon/band (instead of a buttonhole).

Another thing I would definitely do is to adjust the size of the back pockets to the measurements of my boyfriend's wallet. It is something Thread Theory suggested in their blog post (here: https://threadtheoryblog.wordpress.com/2013/04/05/what-makes-menswear-interesting-to-sew/) and I love the idea!
