Summer Stashbuster

Pattern: The Purl Bee, Laura's Loop Cap Sleeve Lattice Top
Yarn: 4 skeins cotton yarn, brand unknown
Cost: remnants from my aunt!

My aunt sent me a giganteum box of remnant yarns - a few balls of this, a few skeins of that. The quality was beautiful and the colors perfect, but nothing quite enough to make a big project with.

That's when I found Laura's Cap Sleeve Lattice Top on the Purl Bee blog. It's got that dolman sleeve that I'm loving right now, and the two tone means that I can use two different yarns. I used up all the grey I had on the body (two skeins), and two more skeins for the white lattice lace. It was perfect!

The whole project is really just a big rectangle sewn up at the sides seams. I knit the bottom part in the round because it's just so easy that way, and lengthened the body while shortening the bodice. I did make a few mistakes on the lattice work - most likely because I knit standing up with my folding bike balanced against me leg on my train ride into work. I'm usually pretty good about spotting mistakes, but in this case I didn't notice until it was all knit up. And you know what? I didn't care! Once I put it on I haven't taken it off, and it even got some compliments from the man.

I usually don't knit summer tops because warm knits don't seem to go well with warm-weather tops, but in this case I think it's the perfect pattern! Now I've got a few more two-toned projects on the brain to knit up the rest of the stash...

  1. That is really really cute!!!!!! Do you think it's something a beginner like me can do?

  2. Yes, I do! Skills required: knit up a big square in regular ol' stockinette stitch, plus a simple lace. If you don't like the lace or think it's a challenge, you could easily do a different lace or just do the whole thing in stockinette.
