Sewing My Own Wedding Dress

When we first announced our engagement, the most common question I got after our proposal story (in a castle! in Prague!) was whether I was going to make my own wedding dress. My answer - most definitely!

I don't think every seamstress needs to make her own dress - it is an incredible time commitment, requires (at least for me) new skills that aren't used in making everyday clothes, and can be a bit of a gamble for your big day. That said, I was eager to take on the challenge. If you have the time and the desire, it's a great opportunity to learn to make a formal dress, or even a simple one if that's more your taste! I also loved the chance to pick out every last detail, perfect the fit, and make something one-of-a-kind.

So it was with great excitement, enthusiasm, and a bit of nerves that I set out on the process to sew my own wedding dress. What followed was a long but enlightening process filled with silk satin, hand stitching, beading all over the place and, at long last, a wedding dress of my very own. And then bridesmaids dresses. And a dog tuxedo...

If you'd like to follow me in my journey, thinking of making your own, or even just want to see posts on clothing construction, fitting, pretty fabrics, learning new techniques, or fun inspiration pictures, here's what I've got coming up this month:

If you have no interest in all things wedding, I apologize. Frankly, I wasn't so much into planning all the other non-sewing details either. We will return to regularly scheduled programming soon...

  2. Congratulations! I look forward to reading all about your process! Project of a lifetime, isn't it? I took a gamble 9 years ago and crocheted my wedding dress! Still very proud of it.

  3. Interested! I'm in the process of sewing my wedding dress (I have a whole year to work on it) now, and am also just not really so interested in the rest of the wedding planning/details. :)

  4. Thanks for sharing your process! I've just started on my handmade wedding too- bridesmaids dresses, my own dress or two, bow ties for the groomsmen, and if he's lucky, a suit for my fiancé.... It will be a great treat to see everything you've done and the steps you've taken to make yours happen as well! And, similarly, all the non-sewing wedding stuff is really of no interest to me, but unfortunately it still has to be done, right? 😂
