This vest is my own creation, a hodge-podge of various influences: cables for style and extra warmth, an old-fashioned rolled collar, a belt for shaping, and pockets because I like them. It took longer to make than expected (I redid the collar 5 times until I got it right), but with these final instructions it should go much quicker.
Yarn: 8 balls of Lion Brand's Wool-Ease ($3.49/ball) in Oxford Grey
Needles: Size 10 and Size 13
Notions: Holders (2), 3 buttons with 1" diameter (mine are wooden), tapestry needle to sew in loose ends
Pattern:
Back: CO 111 sts. K18 rows in P1, K1 rib. Next row: P1, *K12, P1, K6, P1; continue for * to end. Cable pattern: for big (12 st) cable, K 11 rows, cable 12th row; for little (6 st) cable, K 5 rows, cable the 6th row. Work piece in cable pattern until 10 big cable rows have been completed, just before the start of the 11th row (about 18 inches). Next row: BO 6 sts, continue cabling for the rest of the row without cabling the last cable. Next row: BO 6 sts, work remainder of row as normal. For the following right-sided rows, P1, K2tog, work until 3 sts remain, ssk, K1. Work as normal on wrong-sided rows. Repeat until all of the sts have been BO on the end cables. Work 4 more big cables (about 6 inches). BO 4 rows after last cable.
Front (x 2): CO 54 sts. K 18 rows, in P1, K1 rib. Next row: P1, *K12, P1, K6, P1; continue from * to end. Work piece in cable pattern for 3 big cables (about 4 inches). Next row: work first cable as normal, work middle three cables (small, big, and small cables) in P1, K1 rib, work last cable as normal. Continue this pattern (working first and last cable as normal, rib in between) for 3 more rows. On the 4th row, BO rib sts, working rest of row as normal. Place work on holders.
On separate (also size 10) needles, CO 22 sts. Work in St st for 28 rows (about 5 inches). Rather than binding off, slide sts from the St st piece onto the vest front holders where the BO rib piece are, between the big end cables. You should now have one end cable, the St st piece, and the other end cable all in a row. Next row, work first cable as normal, resume cable pattern for St st piece (K6, P1, K12, P1, K6, P1), work last cable as normal. Work piece in cable pattern as before until 1o big cable rows have been completed, just before the start of the 11th row (about 18 inches).
For the right front vest piece (x1): BO 6 sts at the beginning of the row, work until 3 sts remain, K2tog, P1. On right side rows: P1, K2tog, work remainder of row until 3 sts remain, K2tog, P1. Work wrong side as normal. Repeat until all the sts have been bound off on the first cable. On right side rows: Work piece as normal until 3 sts remain, K2tog, P1. Repeat until all the sts have been bound off on the last big cable and the last small cable. Work one more big cable and BO after 4 more rows.
For the left front vest piece (x1): P1, ssk, work as normal for remainder of row. On wrong side row, BO 6 sts, work remainder as normal. On right side rows: P1, ssk, work remainder of row until 3 sts remain, ssk, P1. Work wrong side as normal. Repeat until all the sts have been bound off on the last cable. On right side rows: ssk, P1, work remainder of piece as normal. Repeat until all the sts have been bound off on the first big cable and the first small cable. Work one more big cable and BO after 4 more rows.
Sew front vest pieces to back piece below the arm holes. Sew top of vest front pieces to top of back vest piece nest to arm hole. Sew pocket flaps onto the wrong side of the vest front pieces. For each armhole, pu 54 sts and join in the round. Work 5 rows in K1, P1 rib. BO. Pu 195 sts starting at the botton corner of the right front piece, up to the neck, around to the bottom corner of the left piece (you may need two sets of needles to do this). Starting with the left piece, work in P1, K1 rib for 4 rows. On fifth row, work until 36 sts remain, BO 2 sts, work 12 sts, BO 2 sts, work 12 sts, BO 2 sts, work remainder of row. On sixth row, work 6 rows, CO 2 sts, work 12 rows, CO 2 sts, work 12 rows, CO 2 sts, work remainder of row. Work 4 more rows. Next row: Work first 24 sts and then place them on a holder; place the last 24 sts of the row on a separate holder. Work 15 more rows in rib st; after each row, place the 1st st of the completed row (farthest from the needle tip and yarn) onto its closest holder. Slide all sts from holders and size 10 needles together onto size 13 needles. BO. Sew on buttons on the left front piece, opposite the button holes. Create two belt loops by making a crochet chain about 2 inches long. Sew one each at the seams between the front and the back pieces at your natural waist. Sew in all loose ends.
Belt: Using the double knitting technique, CO 6 sts on size 10 needles. Work belt for 62 inches or until desired lenght. BO. Sew in all loose ends.
