I am finally embracing my collection of Vogue Patterns. Every post that involves them I complain about their million pattern pieces and unnecessary and overcomplicated construction. But I find myself buying Vogue over and over again. I found that my most successful use of the patterns is when I do it my way: Cynthia Steffe as a monster costume, a Rebecca Taylor dress used to make a bathing suit. So I cut this dress my way, combining elements from the very similar Rebecca Taylor pattern. I kept the pleating at the top but got rid of the weird skirt and the long sleeves. I added pockets and the draw string from Rebecca Taylor. I spaced the buttons to accomodate however many I had in my stash. And somehow, Vogue got fun!

But just because I didn't follow all the directions or cut out all the pattern pieces doesn't mean I got lazy. The real reason I buy Vogue patterns is that I love the pleating, the rose shoulders, the details, the stuff I can't draft myself. I really liked the detail on the front and back yoke, and it was a bit of a challenge.

I also love the inside almost as much as the outside. I would wear it inside out if I could just to show of the serging. For this project I ditched the french seams and went for serged seam allowances, sewn down again for a nice clean finish. The pockets are great, too. Probably the most ingenious step was the drawstring from the Rebecca Taylor pattern, which is elastic in the middle with fabric at each end--so comfortable!

This will be my summer dress!
