Tie Front Blouse #2

Pattern: Burda Style's Tie-Front Blouse #118B
Fabric: silk blend
Cost: $9

The remnants bin has been my new favorite place to score nice fabric ever since I found 1 3/4 yds Italian wool for $17. This time around I found a soft and silky fabric (I can't remember exactly what it was...) for about $9, and had just about enough to make another tie-front blouse

BurdaStyle's pattern is an easy pattern, but what made this project especially difficult for me was that slippery, slightly stretchy fabric! The cutting was a pain (maybe some day I'll learn to starch spray stuff like a real professional), and the hemming was exceedingly difficult. The rolled hem on my straight stitch machine didn't work, and the rolled hem on the serger was possibly worse, even after getting my machine tuned-up. I finally settled on just plain serging all the edges, and this worked much better. This experience was very reminiscent of making my Date Night Top.

After the sewing, the shirt is a dream to wear: it slips on easily and feels super soft, breathable, and silky all day. Worth it? Yes!

  1. A bow blouse is high on my list to sew in 2012. Yours is super fun! I can't believe you've gotten so lucky with the remnant bin.

On a completely different note, are you thinking of going to the BurdaStyle Sewing Handbook Launch Party on Monday? I'm going to do my best to go, and it would be fun to meet other sewing bloggers in the area.

  4. Hi, I'm new to your blog, and love your sewing & taste in clothing. Just curious, I checked this pattern out & it starts at size 36, was it too big for you? Thanks!

  5. Thanks Kara! Actually the 36 is a US size 4, which worked pretty perfectly for me. Here's the Burda size chart so you can check it against your own measurements: http://www.burdastyle.com/downloads/SizeChart_Women_s_Inches.pdf

Can't wait to see your finished product!
