Fashion Challenge Diary #3: The Kitchen Sink

It's week 3 of the Fabric Mart Fashion Challenge! You can see all the entries and vote for your favorite here.

Patterns: Jacket drafted/frankenpatterned with help from BurdaStyle's Wrap Cardigan and McCall's Misses' Unlined Jacket #M6519; Top based on Grainline's Scout Woven Tee
Fabric: a woven bottom weight, a two-toned ponte, challis, and white mesh

This week's challenge was to make two garments from a mystery bundle of three fabrics. My fabrics (above) included a camel-colored bottom-weight, a two-toned ponte knit, and a flower print challis. This being the fabric mixing challenge, I also added my own white mesh to the pile - because if you're going to mix things up, you better really go for it, right?!

The camel colored bottom-weight fabric and two-toned ponte seemed to go really well together, so that was my first instinct for this challenge. But how often do you combine wovens with a knit? I had been wanting to do an interesting neckline for a while, so I created a woven jacket lined with the ponte. Then I used just the knit ponte for the sleeves, which makes for a very comfortable, light-weight jacket. The lining provides just enough warmth, and the sleeves are oh-so-stretchy and wonderful. I also love how you can adjust the neckline to a few different styles - I styled it here so you can see as much of the lining as possible.

Here is a shot of the jacket, using Fabric Mart's recommendation to add some accessories to the mix. Right now, my accessories apparently include a purse, a necklace, and some fall leaves.

And here are the detailed shots, showing off the lining, top stitching, and back vent:

For the top, the challis was really too delicate to mix with the bottom weight or the ponte, but I had one more fabric-mixing technique up my sleeve that I was dying to try. So, for this top, I used some mesh from my stash to create a zippered insert detail, which can be zipped up or down depending on my mood. Just one more example of how versatile the Scout Tee is...

From the front, it's also a sweet little top to go under the jacket.

And here are some more detail shots:

I'm exhausted from all the sewing this week, but happy to have come out the other end with some wearable, practical pieces from this crazy mish-mash of fabrics. I also learned the value of mixing different weights, to make a jacket lighter or add some more detail to a top. I think this could be a great technique for those extra 1/2 yard pieces of fabric left over from projects, and I'm already inspired to try some more mix and matching. I'll post more inspiration pics up tomorrow.

For now, head on over to the Fabric Mart blog and vote for your favorite!
