Grad Student Uniform

Pattern: modified Tessuti Mandy Boat Tee
Fabric: sweater knit
Cost: free

Welp, I'm just a few days away from turning in my Master's thesis, and I figured this was as good a time as any to procrastinate and finish up some sewing. This here is what I call my 'grad student uniform' - comfy, stretchy, and perfect for sitting around all day adding APA citations to your paper.

Don't get me wrong - for class, I usually wear the same clothes as I do for work. But because I ride my bike about 9 miles roundtrip to school, spend lots of time at home, and take the dog on plenty of stress-relieving walks, my off-hours uniform is something that approximates activewear. Yes, I'm that chick

The pattern is adapted from Tessuti's free Mandy Boat Tee. Here are the changes I made for a perfect grad student uniform:

  • tunic length - great for wearing over leggings-as-pants
  • split hem with side slits - the perfect length in front and back
  • crew neck - so that I never have to worry about bra straps
  • long sleeves - because it can get cold in the library
  • free fabric from the Bay Area Sewists fabric swap - since grad students don't have a budget for more fabric

Of course, the irony is that I have finally completed this just as I am ready to graduate. I guess that is the challenge with slow, handmade fashion. I'm not worried though, as I'm sure it will make perfect weekend clothes later on. See you on the other side!

  1. Cool and comfy, you can't go wrong there! :) I love the fabric that you chose for this. The stripe direction is rad!
